Volunteering at Over the Rainbow
A tongue in cheek look at the first volunteering weekend held at Over the Rainbow, June 2009.... “A surreal exercise in volunteering, somewhere over the rainbow; or, a tale of ten women, one weekend and a big to do list in the garden…
And so they came – having heard the call, they came now to answer it. Each in turn, whether by day or night, passed thought those ancient iron gates and into the magical wilderness beyond… They came to do a job, and as each woman surveyed the landscape around the house, the enormity of that job was becoming clear…Just as well the longest day was still ahead.
The approach to the house was enough - at this point any woman thinking of a spot of gentle weeding between sips of chardonnay would have been well advised to ditch those gloves and scarper! Maybe it was the waft of Uncle Ralph’s amazing curry, maybe it was something less definable altogether.
Day 1: the log run. Mission: To move the existing log pile from outdoor shed to indoor shed, then refill outdoor shed with freshly chopped logs from outdoor woodpile. Oh yes, and replant a large tree at lunchtime.
In order to completely disorient those foolhardy enough to think they were reasonably fit, Marie introduced this impossible to finish task. This should sort the girls from the women she thought….
Though what it mostly did was to separate the women from their sensibilities. One or two of the women discovered a slightly disconcerting passion for axes and other tools of mass destruction.
At the end of the day Marie silently congratulated herself as she cast her eyes over the weary bunch and thought; we’ll have no trouble tonight from this rowdy lot.
Day 2: clearing the undergrowth. Mission: To tame the untame-able bush. This at first at least seemed a lot more genteel with pruning shears and gardening gloves – until it became clear the undergrowth was biting back. Amid the Armageddon-like scenes; fires burning everywhere and wild looking women in tank girl attire, Maxine did manage to get her hair done, and the installation of Helen (Post Modern Performance Cook) meant that tea breaks were about to take on a whole new dimension.
Day 3: finishing what we’d started. Mission: To clear up before clearing off. Started with a yoga stretch to ease the aches of those new found muscles (thanks Rose). I must admit memory starts to fail me here – it had all become a blur of laughter and kinship in the great outdoors – the sort of bonding a group develops when everyone surprises themselves by what can be achieved with goodwill, friendships new and old and an irrepressible sense of humour. Throw in a little solstice magic and as we all found out the sky has no limits…
Extra-curricular activities included an evening trip to the beach, badger spotting, free admission to Maxine’s faerie grotto, an explanation of the advances of neuroscience, and an introduction (for me at least) to drinking Port on the verandah. Oh and did I mention the endless innuendo and the look on Uncle Ralph’s face?
So all in all, thanks to Marie for providing our free three day passes to the wonderful outdoor gym, the non-stop laughter workshop, the nature watch, the excellent board and lodge and the wildlife, of which we all became a part. " GW
